Academic Pentathlon

The Academic Pentathlon was founded in 1984 as a means of fostering academic excellence among students who represent a wide diversity of personal and academic backgrounds and interests. Participants will compete in five academic tests. These are Literature, Mathematics, Social Studies or Science, Written Super Quiz and Oral Super Quiz. Each test will be thirty minutes with the exception of the Oral Super Quiz. Trophies, medals and ribbons are presented to participants.

A team consists of nine fully participating members (3 Honors, 3 Scholastic, 3 Varsity) for each grade level (6,7,8) from a school. LMS has a total of 27 participants and 9 alternates. Students apply for the team after first trimester grades are released. Learners are chosen on the basis of grade point average, the ability to work with others, and the availability to give 100% commitment to the team practices, the competition, and the awards night.

Practices last for approximately 9 weeks and begin in January and end in March. Coaches include Mrs. Ambriz (Science), Ms. Lucatero (Math), Mrs. Silva (History), and Mrs. Garcia (Language Arts). We will have a Pentathlon Team Informational meeting at the end of October where students can learn more about Pentathlon and receive their sign-up sheets.
